This game will only be the second of five bowls to take place and Saturday, and there’s a lot of football left to assess, so in as brief a manner as possible: the pick for the 2012 New Era Pinstripe Bowl between the Syracuse Orange of the Big East (soon to be ACC) and the West Virginia Mountaineers, now of the Big 12.
Syracuse Orange vs. West Virginia Mountaineers | Saturday, Dec. 29, 3:15pm ET | WVU -4 | ESPN
A few years back, this was a conference game, but by this time next year, neither team will be in their old home known as the Big East.
West Virginia is one of those teams that makes you scratch your head. Their offense, led by Geno Smith, is one of the best in the country, but their defense is one of the worst. The combination of the two will get you to 7-5. As for Syracuse, they mediocre’d their way to a 7-5 record, as both their offense and defense have been very ordinary this 2012 season. Credit where it’s due, as Syracuse has played well in their last three games.
Now, these two teams face off in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, a place where Syracuse has been before (in a very controversial win, I might add). This time, they might need some controversy to pull through, as the Mountaineer offense is very capable and quite scary. Would I put big money on WVU? No, not with that defense, but they do have the better offense in a game that will be all about it.
