A Saturday of almost round-the-clock bowl games comes to an end late at night with the last of five. That one is the 2012 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and it features the TCU Horned Frogs of the Big 12 and the Michigan State Spartans, hailing from the Big Ten.
Texas Christian Horned Frogs vs. Michigan State Spartans | Saturday, Dec. 29, 10:15pm ET | TCU -2.5 | ESPN
TCU made a decent splash as they entered the Big 12, while Michigan State had a somewhat disappointing season as they said goodbye to quarterback Kirk Cousins. TCU lost their quarterback, too, but that was for different reasons.
What makes this game difficult to pick is that both of these teams hit the skids as the season wrapped up. The Horned Frogs lost four of their last six while Sparty did the same.
Michigan State’s defense is excellent, allowing only 16.3 points per game in a solid conference, but their offense has been dreadful this season. The Spartans are only good for about 20 points per game and have been held to fewer than 20 points six times this year. On the other hand, TCU’s defense has done admirably in the Big 12, allowing 23 points per game, but their offense has been more potent than Sparty’s at 29 ppg.
Both of these teams played schedules that were similar in difficulty and this is a close call. Going on defenses, one would have to give a slight edge to Michigan State, but my gut says something different will happen out in Arizona.
