Bowl four of five on Saturday is an intriguing one down in San Antonio. This is the 2012 Valero Alamo Bowl, featuring the #23 Texas Longhorns of the Big 12 and the #13 Oregon State Beavers out of the Pac-12.
Texas Longhorns vs. Oregon State Beavers | Saturday, Dec. 29, 6:45pm ET | ORST -3.5 | ESPN
This is an interesting matchup, and definitely one of the more substantial matchups of the day. Texas can score points and hang with some good teams, and that much we know, but Oregon State can more than hold their own. The difference between these two teams has been defense: in a tough Pac-12, Oregon State allowed less than 20 points per game, which helped the Beavers go 9-3. Meanwhile, the Horns have had some disappointing performances on that side of the football, giving up at least 40 points four times.
As a matter of fact, Texas has only one win over a ranked team this season (while losing the other three): #18 Texas Tech in November. Oregon State split their four games against ranked opposition, but have lost the last two to worthy opponents in Stanford and Oregon.
Neither one of these teams is playing their best football of the season while approaching the Alamo Bowl. One would think that when the two offenses are good, defenses will be the deciding factor. Based on body of work through the regular season, the Beavers have the edge in that department.
