2012-13 College Basketball Picks: Big East

The Big East is the largest of the major college basketball conferences. Sure, it’ll change again next season, but it won’t get any smaller (either in number of teams or coast-to-coast breadth). With an odd number of 15 teams, their conference tournament is sure to have an ugly bracket. That’s a matter for another time, however: how about those Big East picks?

2012-13 College Basketball Predictions: Big East

1. Louisville Cardinals
2. Syracuse Orange
3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
4. Cincinnati Bearcats
5. Pittsburgh Panthers
6. Georgetown Hoyas
7. Marquette Golden Eagles
8. South Florida Bulls
9. St. John’s Red Storm
10. Connecticut Huskies
11. Villanova Wildcats
12. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
13. DePaul Blue Demons
14. Providence Friars
15. Seton Hall Pirates

The sad part here for the Big East is that three of their predicted top five teams — Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh — will all be in the ACC a few years from now. That’s probably less sad for the teams who normally lose to them, but having great programs like that in your conference makes everyone in the conference indirectly look better.

The top half of the conference will be highly competitive in particular, and right now, the Big East looks like it could yield about seven NCAA Tournament bids. It’s November, though, not March.
